Second Chance: Ford Promises Two More Years of GT Supercar Production

Since Ford first announced its production plans for the new Ford GT—just 500 cars for the first two years—we’ve suspected that more cars eventually would be built. After all, a ton of people applied to own one of the mid-engined supercars, with only 500 receiving happy letters of acceptance and more than 6000 receiving sad letters of rejection. Ford has finally confirmed our hunch, promising an extra two years of GT production on top of the original two.

The move bodes well for those who weren’t able to secure a Ford GT from the initial 500-car run, but so far, the odds of grabbing an extended-run GT are up in the air. That’s because Ford has yet to reveal how many cars it plans to build over the extra two years of production. We’d guess that Ford will crank out another 500 cars to maintain the GT’s rarity, but that’s pure speculation at this point.



Ford has laid out just who might be eligible for one of the new GTs, namely those who were waitlisted for the initial 500 cars (they’ll be eligible for the third-year production cars), as well as those who “missed the original application window”—in other words, new applicants—who will have a shot at fourth-year-of-production GTs. There’s more good news, at least for racing fans: The four-year total production run will correspond with Ford’s racing efforts with the GT in IMSA and the World Endurance Championship. That means more Le Mans showdowns!
